Motorhome pitches – Tips and tricks

Motorhome parking spaces – goal achieved! And now a “parking space

Pure freedom: travel – and rest – flexibly and independently

You are travelling with your motorhome. At some point, perhaps in the evening, you are looking for a motorhome parking space? Whether to relax and rest. For one night or several nights? We give you tips on where you can do this. And how to do it simply and easily.

In principle, there are two options for where you can park your motorhome overnight. The first is on a publicly designated parking space. Or secondly, with an exception for overnight stays outside the official motorhome sites.

As a rule, pitches have less upmarket basic facilities. Nevertheless, there are great differences in comfort between the various pitches. For example, simple pitches are offered where only the parking space is provided. Other pitch operators, on the other hand, often offer additional amenities, such as a supply and waste disposal station, possibly a TV connection or WLAN access, toilets and showers and more.

Depending on the facilities, the prices of the different pitches can vary considerably. However, not all pitches are available for a fee. Information on facilities and prices can usually be found online.

Pitches are often offered by local authorities or private individuals. You can stay overnight there in your motorhome without any problems. Pitches are independent motorhome sites with designated parking spaces, e.g. in front of campsites, on camping sites, at inns or sports grounds, on farms, at wineries, golf courses, marinas, mountain railways, museums, amusement parks, thermal, open-air and indoor swimming pools, etc.

Nowadays there is a huge range of pitches in almost every beautiful spot. Everyone can find the right pitch to enjoy their stay.

Campsites are comfortable and have everything you need, including a reception with a contact person, places for caravans and motorhomes, tents, versatile sanitary facilities and often offers for sports, games and leisure (bicycle rental, beach volleyball, fitness, boat rental, access to the beach, etc.). The facilities at the campsites vary, as do the costs. These depend, among other things, on the size of the pitch and the facilities. Electricity and water are often already included in the price. Additional costs may be incurred for showers, services, etc.

Advantages of pitches

  • Pitches are usually cheaper than campsites or even free of charge. There is no check-in required and you are usually more flexible in terms of time (no check-in and check-out times).
  • The pitches are often located in the immediate vicinity of the city or tourist attractions. Footpaths, cycle paths and hiking trails are often within easy reach and yet the pitch is in the middle of nature. Time out from everyday life and unique experiences are thus guaranteed.

Advantages of campsites

  • Planning reliability, as the stand can be reserved in advance (usually fixed times for arrival and departure).
  • More service.
  • Larger pitches, e.g. the erection of an awning is permitted.
  • Guarded grounds that are not easily accessible to strangers offer more security.
  • In most cases, the campsites are in a beautiful location, e.g. directly on the coast, on a riverbank, a lake or in the middle of nature.

Motorhomes parked on motorhome sites are welcome. Wild camping, on the other hand, is less desirable.

We also want to give you tips on the subject of “wild camping” for your journey. We want you to travel safely and without complications.

Wild camping (i.e. spending the night in the wild or in public places in tents, cars, vans or camper vans away from designated camping facilities) is prohibited in Germany in most federal states – except with permission. Heavy fines may have to be expected, as a right of entry for all moving, motorised and parked vehicles, trailers, tents and making a fire is usually excluded in the context of nature conservation. Entering and staying in the great outdoors (except nature reserves, landscape conservation areas, etc. as well as and private property, private land, agricultural land) is permitted under nature and forest conservation laws, but not spending the night.

In some federal states, wild camping is permitted under certain conditions (Brandenburg, Bremen, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. and Schleswig-Holstein). However, camping is possible with permission from the landowner (private individual or the state). In addition to public forest and nature camping sites, there are also car parks where overnight camping is possible. Spending the night in the great outdoors is an inexpensive, adventurous and romantic alternative to camping sites.

Different regulations apply in other countries with regard to wild camping. If you are considering camping in the wild abroad, it is advisable to find out in advance about the laws in force in the country concerned.
